South Royalton Middle School Enrichment and Special Programs

South Royalton Middle School students enrich their traditional academic program with an array of programs that allow them to apply knowledge and skills, develop artistic talents, and stay fit while increasing abilities in sports and athletics.

Current Middle School enrichment and special programs include:

Technical Education:  Students learn the principles of applied technology.  Tools, measurement, and craft techniques are applied to kite, CO2 car, clock, and penholder building. Students also prepare oral presentations and reports.

Family and Consumer Sciences:
(7th grade) Family and Consumer Sciences introduces students to basic sewing skills, laundry, child care, sexuality education, teenage grooming and healthy breakfast and snack preparation through a series of mini-units.  Much of the instruction is interactive and hands-on.

Art (8th grade):  A one semester class, Art 8 explores universal art themes through community connections and world cultures. Students develop an understanding of the basic elements of art and principles of design. Working with a variety of media, students will work to develop skills in personal expression through visual art forms.

Computers: Students develop computer and software usage skills that are important for report writing, presentation creation, and information gathering. Gaining and practicing these skills in Middle School prepares students for productive computer use in High School.

Chorus and Chambers: Students sing a variety of vocal music, using two and three part harmony. Several performances will be held during the school year. Middle School students are also welcome to join Chambers, a cappella group, which practice before school, once a week.

Band: Seventh and eight graders are welcome to play in the band whether even if they are just starting to play an instrument. Students pick their own instrument and receive weekly lessons at school. The band plays several concerts and marches in various parades throughout the school year.

Physical Education:
Middle School physical education classes keep students active and help them improve athletic skills. On the first day of class, students will find out what clothes they will need for class and where they can store gym supplies.

Language Arts: This new class for 8th graders provides direct, individualized instruction in reading, writing and practical math skills.
